“Sunshine journalist” addresses UWI students on communication in sports

For Release Upon Receipt - September 26, 2012

St. Augustine

Mrs. Debbie Derry, self-described “sunshine journalist” from South Africa, visits The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, to address students of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management from September 28th to 30th, 2012.

Mrs. Derry is a Senior Communication Manager at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in South Africa. After earning her Bachelor of Journalism at Rhodes University, South Africa, in 1983, she went on to gain a wealth of experience in the field, working for multiple newspapers and magazines in her country, and eventually acquiring her Master’s Degree in Media Studies in 2009. During her three-day guest lecture, Mrs. Derry will teach students in the Post Graduate Diploma programme about the theoretical and practical rudiments of communication in sport. The weekend session will culminate in a media conference that will be staged by the students themselves. Communication and sports journalists have been invited to witness the conference and offer constructive criticism and advice.

The UWI/FIFA/CIES Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management is offered through the Department of Management Studies at The UWI’s Faculty of Social Sciences. The UWI entered this partnership with the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) in Switzerland under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) through the signing of an MOU in 2009. This year the programme welcomed its third cohort and, in addition to Mrs. Derry’s lecture, the students are looking forward to completing modules in ‘Law and Sports’ and ‘Sports Finance’, as well as having another guest lecture this November, when FIFA Marketing Alliance Manager, Mr. Solomon Mudege, will visit the St. Augustine Campus to discuss marketing and sponsorship at FIFA World Cup events.
