Message from the Vice Chancellor

It is with great pride and deep appreciation that I extend congratulations to the School for Graduate Studies and Research on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, celebrated under the theme “30 Years of Excellence in Graduate Studies and Research: Advancing Caribbean Development in a Global Context.” 

Over the past three decades, the School has been a beacon of scholarship, innovation, and leadership across the Caribbean. Its commitment to advancing knowledge and nurturing talent has not only strengthened the academic reputation of The University of the West Indies but has also contributed meaningfully to regional development and global discourse. The positioning of our graduates throughout the Caribbean and the world is a powerful testament to this impact. 

This anniversary provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey of graduate education and research, while also charting a bold course for the future. The planned activities, including the research and innovation displays across our libraries, the Vice-Chancellor’s Forum, fundraising gala, postgraduate students’ “Give Back Day,” the 4th Annual Postgraduate Student Conference, and the launch of the online research impact pictorial embody the spirit of excellence and collaboration that defines the School. 

Aligned with our strategic objectives, these initiatives will showcase the tangible impact of graduate research, strengthen our reputation, mobilize resources for continued growth, deepen institutional collaboration, and inspire the next generation of scholars. They remind us that graduate studies are not only about academic achievement but also about service, innovation, and the transformation of societies. 

As we celebrate this milestone, let us recommit ourselves to advancing Caribbean development in a global context, ensuring that our research and scholarship continue to resonate far beyond our shores. I salute Pro Vice-Chancellor Aldrie Henry-Lee and her predecessors, our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners whose collective dedication has made this achievement possible. 

Grounded in thirty years of excellence, I look forward with full confidence to a future of even greater achievement and distinction.
