Prof Adesiyun cops regional Service Award

Professor Abiodun Adesiyun, Director of the UWI School of Veterinary Medicine at The UWI, St Augustine Campus, is one of two Veterinarians who have received regional Awards for Meritorious Service.

The Awards were presented to Professor Adesiyun and Dr. Keith Amiel of Jamaica at a special banquet, held as part of the closing ceremony of the 26th Biennial Caribbean Veterinary Conference, held in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, from November 3rd to 6th, under the auspices of the Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association (JVMA).

Dr. Keith Amiel of Jamaica was honoured for services to agriculture and the veterinary profession, while Professor Abiodun Adesiyun, a Professor of Veterinary Public Health at the UWI Faculty of Medical Sciences in Mt Hope, was honoured for meritorious service in recognition of his contribution to Veterinary Education and to the development of the veterinary profession in the region.

“Since assuming duties as Director of the School of Veterinary Medicine in November 2006, it has been my professional ambition to position UWI SVM as the regional Veterinary School. Therefore, I see the award as one for all staff in the School of Veterinary Medicine, for their support of my vision for the School,” Professor Adesiyun said in a brief statement after he received the award.

The 26th Biennial Caribbean Veterinary Conference drew a total of 231 participants from the Caribbean, Central & South America, the USA, Canada and India. The School of Veterinary Medicine sponsored several students to attend the conference, where they delivered academic presentations, alongside other presenters from across the region.

The JVMA received accreditation from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) as a provider of Continuing Education (CE) thereby allowing the participating veterinarians to receive internationally recognized CE credits – a first for a CARICOM-based veterinary group. The 27th Biennial Caribbean Veterinary Conference will take place in Trinidad & Tobago in 2012.
