Association of Caribbean Historians comes to St Augustine for 56th Annual Conference

The 56th Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean Historians (ACH) took place in Trinidad from June 1–5, 2025. With an opening ceremony at the Campus Principal’s Office of at UWI St Augustine on the Sunday, the rest of the conference activities were held at the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.

“The annual ACH conference,”says Dr Gelien Matthews, Head of the Department of History at UWI St Augustine,“is devoted to the promotion of Caribbean history from a multidisciplinary, pan-Caribbean perspective, and is the primary association for scholarly and public historians working in the field. It aims to encourage intellectual exchange among historians of the English, Spanish, French and Dutch Caribbean.”

Historians from universities and other institutions of higher education from the Caribbean (including the Dutch Caribbean and French Antilles), Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the US took part in panels and gave presentations under the theme “Multilingual Connections and Under-Represented Geographies”.

The ACH emerged as an organisation from discussions on regional collaboration in 1969.
