Usually, when we think about a university campus, we think of a place of study. On June 4, students and staff at UWI St Augustine showed that the campus can be used for more than academic pursuits. They brought their artistry, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurial spirit to the JFK Auditorium, JFK Quadrangle and the Engineering Undercroft for The UWI Pop-Up Shop.
Pop-up shops are deliberately temporary stores and shops that give budding and part-time entrepreneurs a chance to do business without the expenses of a permanent operation. As part of The UWI’s 75th anniversary activities, the St Augustine campus held its pop-up shop to “showcase the incredible innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of our campus community”, its official statement said.
It was quite a showcase. Sellers brought out handcrafted jewelry, wood carvings, pastries and other desserts, locally designed and sewn clothing, plants, decorative items, fragrances, beverages, and much more.
