The indefatigable Erica Williams-Connell stands alongside this year’s winner of the Eric Williams “School Bags” Essay competition, Omari Joseph, while PS in the Ministry of Public Administration, Maxie Cuffie shares in congratulating the young man. The prize-giving ceremony was held in August at the Alma Jordan Library. The biennial competition is one of the outreach activities coordinated by the Eric Williams Memorial Collection, which is in the custody of the AJL. Regional students are invited to submit their essays on a chosen subject.

Omari is a former student of Queen’s College in Guyana and is now a student at The UWI St. Augustine campus. Vishala Nackchadie placed second and Kela Sunshine, third. They are both from Trinidad and Tobago. The first winner of the competition, Dr. Dexnell Peters was a guest speaker. According to Lorraine Nero of the West Indiana section, he was an undergraduate at The UWI, got first class honours and was a valedictorian and recently completed his PhD at Howard University. “It shows how the persons who come through this competition continue to excel,” she said.
