A visit from Uganda

In June 2012, a delegation from Makerere University in Uganda, led by its Chancellor, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, visited The UWI St Augustine Campus.

Makerere University is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of tertiary education in Africa, with a long history of accomplishments.

Chancellor Kagonyera reminded that in the past Africa and the Caribbean had healthy academic ties and in particular, Makerere and The UWI’s predecessor, the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA), which had enjoyed a strong relationship in the field of Agriculture. He believes that the UWI would be a good starting point to rekindle this historical collaboration and so he worked with Trinidad and Tobago’s High Commissioner to Uganda, His Excellency Patrick Edwards, to organize the visit.

The delegation consisted of the Chancellor and Principals of the Nine Colleges of Makerere University who sought to identify areas of mutual interest and strength and areas for collaboration including research, student and staff exchanges.

They met with St Augutine Campus Principal, Professor Clement Sankat, and Deputy Principal, Professor Rhoda Reddock, as well as Deans and various Department Heads of the five Faculties at the St Augustine Campus over a two-day period (as part of their five-day mission to Trinidad).

The two Universities have agreed to collaborate on specific projects, with the fields of Agriculture, Engineering and the Humanities being identified as the highest priorities. The International Office at St. Augustine will take the lead in managing the process of developing the details for each project and coordinating their execution along with the relevant Faculties.
