International Cocoa Genebank, Trinidad

CRC is custodian of the International Cocoa Genebank, Trinidad (ICGT), recognised by Bioversity International, CACAONET, and FAO Trust.

The ICGT is a field genebank consisting 16 cocoa trees per plot planted at a spacing of 1.83m x 1.83m within ~100 acres. In addition to conservation, the ICGT also hosts research and has irrigation facilities. The following table shows the composition of the ICGT.

From the inception of cocoa research in Trinidad and Tobago, the task of assembling the ICGT has spanned over sixty years of virtually continuous effort. A large part of this success is owed to the cadre of a succession of reputable scientists associated with this historical centre of excellence in cocoa research.
