Welcome to the St. Augustine campus History website! Here you would find a community of scholars and students
dedicated to the study and practice of history with emphasis on Caribbean, African, Asian and Latin American Studies.
Our West Indian collection of documents, housed in the Library, contains rare and valuable material and is constantly
used by researchers. Our Archaeology Centre is engaged in the excavation, cataloguing and preservation of Caribbean
artifacts.
Mission and Vision
Mission
The Department of History will provide insights into the region's historical legacy and promote the management of its
archaeological heritage, through its teaching programmes and research agenda.
Vision
A Department of History that is regionally and internationally recognized through its promotion of the study of
Caribbean civilization and for its contribution to the development of the historical consciousness of the peoples of
the Caribbean.

Archaeology Centre
Founded in 1981, the Archaeology Centre is the centre of archaeological activity in Trinidad and Tobago.
Administered by resident archaeologist, Dr. Basil Reid, the Centre bears the following responsibilities:
- It trains students in the theory and practice of archaeology
- It initiates archaeological research at U.W.I.
- In consultation with the Archaeological Committee of Trinidad and Tobago, it updates the national inventory of
all known sites in the twin island republic.
- It undertakes the mapping, surveying and excavation of sites in Trinidad and Tobago
- It publishes, on a timely basis, reports on archaeological activity in Trinidad and Tobago.
- It works closely with the Archaeological Committee in the archaeological heritage management of Trinidad and
Tobago.
