Centre
for Medical Sciences Education
The
Centre for Medical Sciences
Education (CMSE) is a physical
and conceptual centre for
harnessing and maximizing
the efficient and effective
use of teaching, learning,
technology, and educational
research resources in the
Faculty of Medical Sciences
(FMS). The mission of the
Centre is to provide academic,
professional and technical
resources towards promoting
continuous improvement in
curriculum planning, and
the delivery of medical education
programmes involving staff
and students at the FMS.

To
institute management
information systems in
the operations of the
Centre with an intelligent
use of the existing network.
-
To
revise existing policies
and protocols for
operations at CMSE.
-
To
utilize state-of-the-art
technologies
to support teaching,
learning, and research.
-
To
develop distance
education programmes
and implement video conferencing
in distance learning.
-
To
increase overall
quality and efficiency
in production.
This includes
the acquisition of
a high quality,
full colour printer
for Problem-Based
Learning (PBL) booklets,
brochures;
and implementing pay-for-print
services
for students, staff and
others.
-
To produce
multi-media publications
(incorporating
photography
and audio-visual)
for health institutions
in order
to generate revenue.
-
To
establish web
publishing and
web archiving along
with web-based
learning resources such
as, PBL booklets,
lecture notes,
timetables,
and distance education
courses; designing
and maintaining
of Faculty’s website
as a means of marketing
the Faculty; providing
easy access to critical
information e.g.
application forms;
as well as information
on the Faculty’s
conferences and
workshops.

To reduce
the
use of paper
in the Centre with
a concern for the
environment,
thereby also decreasing
stationery
cost.
-
To
provide support
to an efficient computer
network for the FMS
within the UWI.
-
To implement
a
research
agenda and a media
outreach in medical
education.
-
To continue
to conduct
staff
development for
FMS, and
to facilitate
student assessment
of teaching at FMS.
-
To
incorporate
Occupational Health
and Safety and security
standards in the
workplace.
CMSE staff member(s) have been involved in:

Inauguration of the Skills Laboratory and skills teaching.

Establishment of an Optical Mark Reader (OMR) scanning facility for machine scored assessments.
-
Consultancies on education and research for national agencies.
-
Resolution of the hardware and software problems in the FMS.
-
Assistance with the identification of teaching resource material: audio-visual resources material, teaching aids, and computer software in collaboration with the FMS library.
-
Provision of audio-visual services to classrooms and laboratories.
-
Monitoring and reviewing teaching in the Skills Laboratory.
-
Consultation with medical teachers on the use of teaching methodologies.
-
Maintenance of Faculty’s website.
-
Producing online courses using WebCT.
-
Contributing a significant role in Curriculum Change Ð collaboration with the Department of Liberal Arts on changing from the Foundation Course on Use of English to Communication Skills for Health Personnel and Communication Skills for the Health Professions.

Conceptualization of training programmes for Information Technology, Family Medicine, and Diabetes Education, ; the design of Dental Auxiliary Training, Pre-Health Professionals and Advanced Nursing.

Development of a Maintenance Plan for the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Spearheading the commissioning of the B.Sc. (Pharm) with the assistance of a team of stakeholders, and the Distance Education Unit which now hosts the M.Sc. in Counselling by distance education from the Mona Campus.

Assistance to staff on the B.Sc. (Pharm), and DVM to conduct effective curriculum reviews and reform.
-
Conducting workshops on Curriculum, Assessment and Item Writing to upgrade the quality of medical education.
-
Collaboration with the Dean’s office in conference planning and events management for major workshops and conferences.
-
Assisting associated health agencies and professional bodies with videography and audio-visual services for workshops and conferences.
-
Participation in Faculty and inter-campus sports and games.
