Pre-Health Professions Programme (PHPP)
A one-year (three-semester) programme designed to prepare students for matriculation to the degree programmes at the UWI – St Augustine Campus in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy.
Introduction
The Faculty of Medical Sciences has arranged for the School of Continuing Studies to deliver the Pre-Health Sciences core courses in English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics, in accordance with the following arrangements:
- On successful completion of the courses, students will have gained credits towards normal matriculation for admission to degree programmes of the Faculty of Medical Sciences or other Faculties of the UWI.
- After students have attained all the necessary matriculation requirements, they will be offered admission into Year 1 of the programmes in the School of Basic Health Sciences.
- Upon registration in the Pre-Health Professions programme, all students will be entitled to enjoy the rights and privileges of registered students in the Faculty of Medical Sciences. In addition, these students will also be entitled to membership of the UWI Guild of Students.
Prospective candidates should have
- A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics and a foreign language (Grade 12 matriculation)
- 5 O’ level passes with grades A, B and C in the same subjects or European equivalents
- Consideration will be given to students transferring from other fields to the health professions
Pre-Health Professions Courses
The 35-credit programme includes courses in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, delivered by modules in three semesters beginning in August as follows:

Course Assessment
Student assessment takes the following form:
1. Continuous assessment
2. End of Semester examinations
At the end of the semester, each subject tutor will submit an assessment known as a Class Mark which accounts for 30% of the student’s Final Mark. The final examination will be graded out of 70%.
Academic Standing
Students should maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (or B). If a students’ GPA consistently falls below 3.0, his or her record will be reviewed by the Administrative Board and he or she may be required to withdraw from the programme.
Certificate Requirements
Upon the successful completion of the Pre-Health Professions Courses, students will be awarded a certificate. The requirement for the Pre-Health Professions Certificate is successful completion of 35 credits with a GPA of 3.0 in English, Mathematics, Physics and Biology core courses. Students who do not meet the requirements for entry into the degree programmes of the Faculty of Medical Sciences will be provided with their transcripts in order to obtain entry into programmes at other Faculties of the UWI, or to other Universities.
Eligibility
This programme is NOT designed for nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. 32 spaces are to be allocated to foreigners; by exception, 8 spaces are allocated to persons nominated and paid for by the Tobago House of Assembly. Nationals of Trinidad and Tobago are referred to the FSA preliminary programme (N1) at the School of Continuing Studies Sixth Form Day School at St John's Rd, St Augustine.
