Research Areas

The Faculty of Medical Sciences consists of schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and advanced nursing education, and is accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). The Faculty is committed to the development of excellence in health research. While its research priorities are determined by local and regional needs, its perspective remains international through the development of productive research collaborations with renowned research institutions across the world. In so doing, the Faculty of Medical Sciences brings developed world technology to solve regional health problems, as defined by regional governments and agencies.

Medicinal Natural Products Research

natural productsMembers of this cluster have been investigating the medicinal properties of Caribbean plants, including anti-cancer, wound healing, antihypertensive and anti-diabetic properties.

Neuroscience/Neurodegenerative Diseases

neurosciencesRecent work by this group includes studies on the effects of calorie restriction and excess calories intake on the brain, the evaluation of neuroprotective drugs, using ischemia and other neurodegenerative disorders, and the role of immune mechanisms of the central nervous system in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders.

Type II Diabetes & Inflammatory Markers

Metabolic Syndrome & COPD Research

metabolic syndrome and COPDThis interdisciplinary cluster explores the association of metabolic syndrome with airway disease in a Trinidadian population with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The research will inform on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and restrictive airway disease (a diagnosis which may be missed) in adult diabetics utilizing biochemical and clinical markers of inflammation, restrictive airway disease and cardiac disease.
