Message From The Director

The School consists of a small but dedicated core of full-time lecturers. In the quest to deliver a programme of the highest quality, adjunct lecturers sourced locally and from within CARICOM are appointed as needed. The faculty has established linkages with international nursing leaders and academic institutions such as Michigan State University – College of Nursing, Mc Master University – School of Nursing and Sheffield University- School of Nursing and Midwifery. At the regional level, through its director, the School participates at the highest nursing policy-making forum, the Regional Nursing Body (RNB) which is a component of CARICOM.
Students are encouraged to be self-directed, innovative, act responsibly, function cohesively and internalise and exhibit professional attributes. Clinical strengths and other life experiences are harnessed and shared, redounding to the benefit of the entire class.

ABOUT THE MASTERS PROGRAMME
The Director Dr Meryl Price had this to say in a press release recently :
As the demands on health care continue to expand and become more complex, there is the increasing need for suitably qualified Health Care Professionals; Advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Educators, Nurse Administrators and other functional and clinical practitioners. To counteract this gap, the School of Advanced Nursing Education, Faculty of Medical Sciences, the UWI is launching the Masters of Science in Advanced Nursing (MSN) degree. This degree programme is a progression of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc.) currently offered at the School of Advanced Nursing Education (SANE), the first of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago. This is a unique opportunity for individuals who have completed their BScN or related undergraduate degree to transition smoothly into graduate studies.
The MSN seeks to target leaders, teachers and advanced clinicians, preparing them for practice. In its initial stages the programme seeks to specialize specifically in the area of Nursing Education and focuses primarily on theory, research and clinical practice. It is anticipated that specialization in Administration/ Management will also be offered in the not too distant future. The MSN is for the serious-minded student who is highly motivated towards achieving greater levels of success in his/her field. The focus must not be only on transition into becoming an increasingly qualified professional but also on transformation; a health care professional who is prepared to make a difference in society by taking an in-depth approach to his/her preparation and practice.
The Programme offers revolutionary and exciting approaches to education such as Distance Education, Teleconferencing, Computer Assisted Instruction and Mentoring, eliminating the prolonged use of lecturing as the sole teaching method. The programme will be offered on both a full-time and part-time basis and hopes to attract persons who are currently practicing nurses. Requirements for admission into the Programme have been set in accordance with general University of the West Indies regulations for higher degrees. Persons desirous of gaining entry into the programme can visit the website at www.sta.uwi.edu/postgrad where instructions on how to apply are available.
