M.Sc Management Studies

Programme Overview

The objectives of the M.Sc. programme are as follows:
(i) To provide the student with a strong background in the conduct of business and management research;

(ii) To provide training in instructional methods for management education and in management consultancy.

 

Requirements

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS-

Applicants should normally possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree in one of the following:

  1. B.Sc. in Accounting or its equivalent for applicants wishing to specialize in Accounting or Finance.
  2. B.Sc. in Management Studies or its equivalent for applicants wishing to specialize in any other field of Management.

 

SPECIFIC PRE-REQUISITES-

Specific pre-requisites for the M.Sc. Programme are:

Basic Mathematics, Basic Statistics, Basic Economics, Financial and Managerial Accounting, Basic Management and Organizational Behaviour

Students who do not have these pre-requisites will be required to enroll in the Faculty of Social Sciences Summer Programme for appropriate courses to make up such deficiencies as specified at the time of acceptance of the application.

Course of Study


The course of study for the M.Sc. will extend over three (3) semesters of full time study. The programme is divided into two categories, coursework and the research project. The first two semesters will be spent on course work while the remaining six months will be devoted to preparation of the research project. Students will be required to complete the following courses as part of the course work component:

Semester I:
MGMT 6003- International Business Management
MGMT 6002- Managerial Statistics
Two (2) courses selected from the list of electives given below

Semester II:
MGMT 6008- Advanced Statistics
MGMT 6007- Research Methodology
Two (2) courses selected from the list of electives given below

Semester III:
Research Project
Workshop in Instructional Skills

The four elective courses must be distinct, at least one of them must be a Specialized Advanced Reading Course and the electives should be relevant to the student’s specialization.

MGMT 6004- Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management

Semester I
MGMT 6006 – Advanced Readings in Accounting & Control
MGMT 6005- Advanced Readings in Marketing Management

Semester II
MGMT 6012- Advanced Readings Financial Management
MGMT 6009- Advanced Readings in Human Resources Management
MGMT 6011- Advanced Readings in International Marketing
MGMT 6013- Advanced Readings in Management Information Systems

Students desirous of pursuing any other relevant course offered by another Department must attain approval from the Head, Department of Management Studies.


Notes

(i) Course choice must be supportive of the student’s intended area of specialization; selection is made with approval of the Head of Department.

(ii) M.Sc. students will be required to satisfy the Department as to their speaking and reading proficiency in Spanish.

(iii) M.Sc. students will be required to complete a short non-examinable workshop on ‘Pedagogy’.

 

Duration of Study

The M.Sc. in Management Studies is offered to full-time students who normally will be expected to complete the M.Sc. within three semesters of registration and must complete within three (3) years of full-time study.

Evaluation in all courses will be by coursework and final examination. Students will be required to obtain at least a grade of B (i.e. 50%) in both components of a course in order to pass the course.

Candidates failing more than one course in a semester or failing the same course twice normally will be required to withdraw from the programme.

 

Award of the Degree

(i) The M.Sc. in Management Studies will be awarded on successful completion of all courses and the research project.

(ii) The M.Sc. may be awarded with distinction if the candidate attains an
overall “A” average in the courses and a similar mark in the project.
