Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Geography or in a related discipline from a recognized university. The candidate must also possess a strong track record of scholarly output in Geography, with success in grant acquisition and experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels in one or more of the following areas:

  • Sustainable Development;
  • Environmental/Climate Change;
  • Gender and Ecology;
  • Food and Agriculture;
  • Economic, Political, or Cultural Theory in Geography

 

Further consideration will be given to candidates possessing:

  • At least five (5) years’ experience in teaching and research at an accredited institution of higher education at the time of appointment
  • Experience with multi-stakeholder outreach, knowledge transfer, service learning, and/or community-engagement
  • Experience in quantitative methods, using SPSS or related statistical software packages and/or GIS
  • Experience in successfully supervising post-graduate student research
  • Experience and research related to tropical environments
  • A Certificate in Teaching and Learning from an accredited institution of higher learning

 

Special Responsibilities

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Geography, and playing a significant leading role in the further development of the discipline;
  • Leading and developing research activity within the subject area;
  • Promoting Geography within the campus community and to external stakeholders in the region and beyond;
  • Applying for external funding;
  • Engaging in research and publishing in areas of research that are relevant to the Caribbean and wider region;
  • Assisting in the implementation, development and delivery of outstanding teaching and multidisciplinary research programmes in Geography.

 

Personal Attributes

The Department places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential. Candidates must also:

  • possess enthusiasm for student development, academic cooperation and collaboration with colleagues;
  • be highly capable of independent research and willing to take initiative;
  • have an appreciation of the mission and structure of the University and Secondary School system;
  • have a demonstrated interest in the Caribbean.
