The Director of the School would be a member of the Senior Executive Management of the Faculty and would report to the Dean.  Therefore, the successful candidate should have qualifications and experience that would make them appointable at the level of Professor.



The candidate should possess extensive experience (a minimum of 10 years) in leadership/administration/management (in Dentistry) within a university or other tertiary level academic department, of which at least five (5) years should be at the level of Head of Department/Deputy Dean/Dean.  The candidate should also have demonstrated a record of distinguished original work as evidenced by a good publication record in reputable journals; outstanding success in and wide recognition of professional activities; and considerable teaching experience (in the particular discipline).  Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, change management and organisational development will be an asset.


Academic Qualifications

The candidate should possess an undergraduate degree or its equivalent and postgraduate qualification in the particular discipline. Examples of such degrees include PhD, Fellowship or Membership in an appropriate Clinical College, Board Certification, Certificate of Specialist training (UK), post graduate clinical MD. Post graduate qualifications in leadership/ management (e.g. MBA, DBA) will be an asset.

Professional Certification

The Director's qualifications should be acceptable for registration with the Dental Council of Trinidad and Tobago DCTT). The Director must provide evidence of full registration with DCTT PRIOR to commencement of this job.



Guides the overall direction/administration of School in the areas of research, teaching and service; in doing so, the candidate will be specifically required to:

  1. Supervise day-to-day administration of The School; overseeing Heads of Department and Unit Coordinators in the execution of their duties
  2. Develop short and long term objectives and plans for the School and the corresponding policies and programmes for achieving same
  3. Determine the staffing needs (academic and ATS) to adequately service the School in all its functional areas; making, soliciting, approving recommendations for recruitment, appraisal, training and promotion
  4. Manage academic programmes, curriculum review and development and introduction of new programmes/ courses (undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development)
  5. Manage School’s finances – developing and managing/ monitoring budgets for teaching, research and service to ensure prudent utilisation of University funds
  6. Direct, manage and monitor the processes related to application, maintenance and compliance with all matters pertaining to institutional and programme accreditation and quality assurance
  7. Direct the supervision and coordination of the basic and clinical sciences programmes and the service/ outreach activities of the School
  8. Liaise with local and regional Professional Councils/Associations and other stakeholders
  9. Represent The School on all relevant Faculty/University and Extra-University Committees

* The Director may be required to teach and supervise postgraduate students.
