My main research interests are based in stories. I like to unearth the untold, the uninteresting, the mundane and find the beauty inside of it. I look for women’s roles throughout society that have been largely ignored by the mainstream and place them in the action. My novel A House With No Angels (Crocus 2019) does just that, working through the 5th Pan African Congress, 70s resistance and black power movement and more recently, the hostile environment in the UK. Throughout my writing career I have undertaken a number of projects using creative writing around mental health, asylum seeking, trauma and intergenerational communication.
I believe that each student who writes should have their own voice and their own way of expressing their creativity. This means that my classroom is organic and students are given the tools with which to explore their own way of writing, from their own experiences within their worlds. My role is to guide through probing and advising and challenging students to question what they are writing and to always do better. I supervise MFA students manuscripts and reflective theses and final year undergraduate theses.
