Dr. Justin Zephyrine

Dr. Justin Zephyrine is a Faculty Development Specialist at the University of the West Indies’ (UWI’s) Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), St. Augustine Campus. A graduate of the UWI,
the Johns Hopkins University (USA), the Harvard Business School (USA), Jilin University (China), and Dowling College (USA), Dr Zephyrine is the former eLearning Support Specialist and Acting Director at the CETL. He has established the Centre’s online and social media platforms (e.g. YouTube and X(formerly Twitter)), and continues to support and train faculty in curriculum, instructional and online
course site design, student engagement, alternative assessments, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual/augmented environments, and online, blended, and remote teaching and learning. Dr. Zephyrine has been instrumental in the implementation of the UWI’s Blended Learning Policy, and Multimodal Policy, its transition to Emergency Remote Teaching, alternative assessments, and online teaching and learning, and its acquisition of lecture capturing, online surveying, video conferencing, and cloud-based learning software.

In addition to converting the CETL’s graduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) programme to a remote format, and initiated its conversion to an online format, Dr. Zephyrine has
spearheaded the creation of the CETL Technology Space, the UWI’s first environment dedicated to faculty training and educational technology integration. He continues to serve as Deputy Chair of the
UWI’s cross-campus Online Faculty Development Committee, and serves in different capacities in other committees e.g. The Blended Learning Committee, The Academic Quality Assurance
Committee (AQAC), The eLearning Committee, The Educational Technology Committee, The Academic Council at the UWI, UWI-ROYTEC and other local, regional and global institutions.
Dr. Zephyrine’s research interests include game-based learning, brain science (neuro-education), educational technology, instructional design, educational and media psychology, and creative technology integration. He has conducted research in Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, The USA, Suriname, Guyana and China. He continues to research and train educators in all school levels, both locally and regionally in curriculum and instructional design, student engagement and educational technologies. Dr Zephyrine has partnered with several companies and organizations, including the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), on educational technology integration initiatives.
Internationally, Dr. Zephyrine has worked with global organizations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the European Union Intellectual Property Organization (EUIPO) in the provision of consultations, training workshops, training manuals and materials. To this end, he has trained special cohorts of professionals in the Caribbean, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
He is also involved in several sport and artistic community initiatives.
