Field Trips

To ensure that you get the most out of your visit to Trinidad – the 'home of the guppy' – we are planning some exciting trips for the 27th, 28th and 29th  June. Please confirm your interest by emailing poeciliid2012@sta.uwi.edu

27th June:  A night-time trip to Matura beach to observe nesting leatherback turtles – and if we’re lucky, hatchlings too! This is a must for anyone who has yet to experience this spectacle.

28th June: A trip across the classic guppy habitat of the Northern Range, stopping at the Asa Wright nature centre for a bird-watching tour. After lunch at the centre we will continue on to the North Coast, stopping at one or more of the beautiful beaches it has to offer, and sampling the famous ‘shark and bake’ (although we strongly recommend choosing one of the alternative, and equally tasty, bony fish options instead). We would return to campus via one of the spectacular viewing points overlooking Port of Spain.

29th June: A hike to the famous Haskins' Introduction site and waterfalls on the Turure River in the Northern Range. This is a short, moderate-level hike along a classic ‘guppy river’, complete with waterfalls and taking us through some stunning tropical forest.
Of course we can’t cover everything that this fascinating island has to offer in just two days, and would encourage those who are able, to incorporate some extra days in both Trinidad and also in Tobago, which boasts stunning sandy beaches, lush rainforest and unrivalled snorkelling and diving opportunities. The committee would be happy to offer advice to those who are considering attaching a few days of holiday before or after the conference.
