About The Systems Lab

The Systems Laboratory, which is under the Office of the Dean, provides the Information Technology support and infrastructure to the Faculty of Engineering to enable the faculty to deliver high quality education at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to engender research.  The Faculty consists of the following Departments, each of which has its own departmental laboratory:

  • Chemical Engineering.
  • Civil Engineering.
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • Mechanical Engineering.
  • Geomatics Engineering and Land Management

The Systems Laboratory assists these Departmental laboratories in their development, ensures access to common teaching and desktop applications and is responsible for the network that interconnects the entire Faculty. 

The Systems Laboratory, located on the 3rd floor, of Block 2, Civil Building,has one computer lab used for training and for general access. It has 48 Windows PCs. The Systems Lab is also responsible for another computer lab on the 3rd floor used by the Engineering Institute to deliver its courses.

The Systems Laboratory is connected to the rest of the campus via high-speed fibre optic cable.  The Systems Laboratory works closely with Campus IT Services to ensure compatibility and unity with the Information Technology Strategy of the Campus.

Responsibilities

The main areas of responsibility of the Systems Laboratory are as follows:

  • Running and administering all the computers and user accounts for the Faculty’s shared computer resources, and for the Systems Laboratory computer labs.  Assistance is also provided to the other departments as required especially when their staff is on vacation or there is an IT vacancy in the department.
  • To monitor, configure and maintain the Faculty’s LAN and LAN related equipment. 
  • To monitor the Faculty’s equipment that connects to the Campus WAN
  • Expansion and upgrade of the Engineering network
  • Provision of email support and creation of email accounts for staff
  • Ensuring comprehensive protection is in place to prevent malicious software attacks on equipment
  • Provision of technical support to the Faculty

The multimedia facilities of the classrooms are currently being upgraded.  A list of the capabilities are in the table of Teaching Facilities in the Faculty of Engineering.

Document readers are also available to expand the tools that lecturers can use.
The Elmo TT-02RX Teachers Tool (Document Reader) is a compact and portable presenter with high-quality imagery, 30FPS blur-free motion video, and SXGA, WXGA, XGA selectable output resolutions.

The included Image Mate 2.0 software and built-in USB 2.0 interface offers video and audio recording capabilities when connected to your PC. Its lens features a 5.2x optical zoom, 8x digital zoom, and auto focus.
In addition, it features an SD/SDHC card slot, easy integration with microscopes, picture-in-picture display, intuitive on-board menu, and an IR remote control.
