THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS IS PROUD TO FEATURE DR. STEPHANIE MOHAMMED FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE DAY – FEBRUARY 11, 2023

WHO IS DR. STEPHANIE MOHAMMED?

Dr. Stephanie Mohammed graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Chemistry from which she then worked alongside her uncles in their family business to learn the tricks and trade of the work environment. At the age of 25 she designed and built her first hydroponic system selling fresh packaged organic produce to the top supermarkets in Trinidad. As a youth, she received the Youth in Agriculture award for her work in the emerging field. She later received 4th place in the 2013 Prime Minsters Award for Scientific Ingenuity in Trinidad for her proposal of a multi-phonics agricultural system. With this experience, she published a monograph to help guide people to build an efficient hydroponic system.

PURSUING A DREAM

In late 2016, she decided to pursue her dream as a scientist in the medical field, where she believed she could make a more meaningful contribution. She began her work at the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies demonstrating labs to prospective pharmacists. She then worked full-time in the Department of Pre-clinical Sciences temporarily transferring to the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Physics to acquire the skills needed for her work ahead.

She received her Ph.D. in Physics (medical) with high commendation for her research on electromagnetic radiation and its effect on the development of polycystic ovaries (PCOs) in 2022 and in that year also, her research was awarded 1st Place in the Thesis Competition across campuses hosted by The University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica Campus.

Today, she continues to research PCOs in both animal models and human studies. Her research area also includes preventative medicine from collaborative researchers and hydroponics, which she enjoys. She has published over ten peer-reviewed papers in research journals and presented at several conferences.

She has received various grants under the guidance of established contributors in her field and has presented her work at both local and international conferences. She was selected among the top 20 young researchers worldwide to receive financial support for young researchers to present her work at the ICAR 2022 in Bologna, Italy.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

When asked to tell about herself, Dr. Mohammed said “I consider myself a dedicated scientist with the goal of contributing to humanity through my research and teaching. Knowledge, wisdom and curiosity create the best version of myself. We all have one life to live, and I truly believe that we must leave it better than when we came so that our future generation of living and non-living things will survive.  We all need to work hard, smart and focus on achieving our goals, be they big or small. Being a scientist is a great honor for the scientific community because it means I can help solve some of the problems facing the scientific world”.

When Dr. Mohammed is not pursuing science, she enjoys adventures such as hiking, dancing, karate and travelling. She also enjoys reading motivational books and said “I believe that having a balanced lifestyle is very important for the mind, body and soul. And I would advise that everyone do that”.
