The Faculty of Law was honoured to host the Honourable Justice Adrian Saunders, President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), on Wednesday 22 March 2023. Justice Saunders offered an engaging presentation on savings law clauses and addressed the divergent approaches taken by the CCJ on one hand and the Privy Council on the other.
Though not limited to death penalty cases, the effects of savings clauses are typically most conspicuous when accused persons are sentenced to death. The CCJ has responded with a commendable humanitarian outlook on these matters while respecting the separation of powers and the rule of law. The lecture was a rewarding experience for all who attended and participated."
