LLM (General)

Candidates for the UWI LLM Degree must complete thirty-six (36) credit hours of the designated course of study. Students pursuing a general LLM can select from any courses offered in the UWI LLM programme.

Oil, Gas and Energy Law

Hone your legal skills to help maximize the positive impact of the lucrative energy industry. Oil and gas law is one of the areas of importance to Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. More broadly the Caribbean region is increasingly susceptible to energy issues and as such a broader look at renewable energy, sustainability and climate change will be addressed in this specialism. This programme is not currently offered by any other institution in the Caribbean and is part of the Faculty’s pioneering work to provide relevant, cutting edge law courses to meet the needs of forward-looking nations pursuing dynamic development.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A UWI LLB degree, or a law degree from a university recognized by the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Persons from non-law backgrounds may also be considered for admission.

COURSE OF STUDY: The core courses, Legislative Drafting, Public Law I (Advanced Constitutional Law), Public Law II (Advanced Administrative Law), and either:
(a) two additional UWI LLM courses; or
(b) a single LLM course and a Research Paper; or
(c) a single LLM course and engage in the Supervised Legislative Drafting Internship.

BLENDED LEARNING DELIVERY: Face-to-face and/or eLearning technology which caters to an international student base, including the wider Caribbean diaspora. Any UWI LLM course taught by staff from one Campus of the UWI will be available through eLearning and/or distance learning modalities to registrants from any Campus.

Legislative Drafting

Learn the technical and theoretical skills of drafting legislation. This programme is designed to equip graduates with the skills to be qualified draftspersons and effective policy advisors to their governments and other clients. Students will learn how to design and draft statutes, treaties and constitutions.

Corporate and Commercial Law

Get the skills to undertake complex matters in Corporate & Commercial Law before international tribunals, ordinary courts and the Caribbean Court of Justice. The Corporate and Commercial Law specialism covers areas of law such as Banking Law, Company Law, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Corporate Insolvency Law and Insurance Law. Graduates will be equipped to address issues and problems arising in these areas and moreover, to serve as consultants, legal advisors and policy advisors to clients, including corporations and regional Governments.

Intellectual Property Law

Gain in-depth knowledge about intellectual property law in the Commonwealth Caribbean and globally. This specialism in Intellectual Property Law will equip students with an in-depth understanding of intellectual property rights, including copyright, patents and trade marks. Graduates of this pathway will be able to apply the various intellectual property laws and rights with the goal of developing Caribbean jurisprudence in the area. The specialisation will train legal minds and so accelerate intellectual property awareness and development at all levels of society.

Public Law

The subject of public law is central to the practice of good democratic governance and to the success of CARICOM’s Single Market and Economy. The Public Law pathway will provide graduates with a deeper understanding of issues in the core subjects of Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, in addition to other relevant areas of law concerning the regulation of public authorities. This specialism will be useful for senior managers of the public service and other persons who provide legal or policy advice about/to governments.
