Background: Over the last three decades, men’s health has emerged as an area of research interest. The relationship between male socialization, the performance of masculinity and health behaviour has been well established. Within the Caribbean, however, there is a gap in the literature on how masculinity affects health beliefs and behaviour.

Aim: This study explored men’s accounts of “doing” masculinity and the implications for health beliefs and behaviours in order to make recommendations for developing male sensitive health services.

Methodology: Men between the ages of 19-60 years in Trinidad and Tobago participated in this study during the period August 2011 to January 2012. Fourteen focus group discussions were conducted among men from various socio-demographic groups and twelve semi structured interviews with men involved in clinical and social programs targeting males. Data were coded thematically using inductive and deductive analysis. Dr. Oscar Noel Ocho has served as a public servant in the Ministry of Health for 34 years prior to joining the University of the West Indies School of Nursing (UWISoN). He is a Registered Nurse whose qualifications include a BSc Nursing (UWI, Mona); MPH (International health (University of Washington); MPhil Sociology (UWI, St Augustine) and a DrPH (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). Dr Ocho’s experience include Health Education Officer, Director Population Programme Unit and Ag. Chief Nursing Officer, Ministry of Health, Trinidad and Tobago. He has made oral presentations at a number of local, regional and international research conference and has published in a peer-reviewed journal.  His research interest encompasses masculinity and health, health policy as well as health systems leadership and management. He is also a talk show host who presents once monthly on i95.5fm on the religious/social programme ‘Lightening’.
