Event Date(s): 26/01/2016

Location: SALISES Conference Centre, UWI St. Augustine.

Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) presents a Research Proposal by Dianna DaSilva-Glasgow, PhD Candidate on the topic, Assessing the Nature and Significance of Non-Tariff Barriers Applied to Guyana’s Exports of Food and Agricultural Products to its Major Markets.

The proposal takes place at 11am.

Abstract

This paper lays out a proposal for the conduct of a study that will focus on; identifying the NTBs that Guyanese exporters face when exporting food and agricultural products to markets outside and within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME); quantifying the direct and indirect costs NTBs impose on exporting and; assessing their impact on export supply. The research is driven by both theoretical gaps and policy issues including limited focus on research work on developing Caribbean economies and the lack of a harmonized regional regime for technical regulations within the Caribbean Community that can result in costs of complying with regulations being unnecessarily high. Due to the absence of readily available and reliable data and the need for policy relevant research conclusions, the research proposes a survey-based design with results to be quantitatively assessed using multivariate regression analysis and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling.

Keywords: non-tariff barriers, food and agricultural commodities, survey, markets
