Abstract

The Work/Life Balance and Ageing in Trinidad Research Project is funded by the Research Development Impact (RDI) Fund of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine.  This research project, embarked upon in 2015, represents the combined effort of staff from the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS) and the Social Work Unit, Department of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago.  Work/life balance is seen as the maintenance of supportive and healthy work and family environments that enable working people to balance work and personal responsibilities. The research explores the challenges of attaining work/life balance; the diverse means individuals use towards attaining that balance; and policy considerations in the context of a rapidly ageing society.  The project uses a multi-disciplinary and multi-method approach to interrogate the lived reality of working populations with attention to the place of the elderly and elder care in contributing to healthy work/life balance.  This is the first of several presentations on findings of the project which culminates in the regional conference “Connecting the Dots: Work • Life • Balance • Ageing” to be held on 26-27 April 2018 at The University of the West Indies, St Augustine.
