The Challenges of Poverty and Inequality at UWI

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad & Tobago – Now in its 7th year, the Conference on the Economy (COTE), the flagship conference of the Department of Economics of The University of the West Indies (St. Augustine), returns on October 10th and 11th from 9am to 5pm at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) on the St. Augustine Campus.  

Under the theme “Managing for Development in Caribbean Economies: Addressing the Challenges of Poverty and Inequality,” this year’s conference features panel discussions on Poverty and Income Distribution and Intergroup Inequality in the Caribbean; Labour and Migration nexus in the Caribbean; Pursuing Diversification and Development through Culture; Export-led Development in the Caribbean; and Education and Human Resource Development for Caribbean Competitiveness. On Wednesday October 10th from 6pm, there will be an Armchair Discussion on Issues in Population and Development after the conference at the LRC. 

The conference also features three youth events, namely the CAPE Economics Students Essay Competition and Undergraduate Essay Competition; the Secondary School Debate Competition and Undergraduate Debate Competition; and the Graduate Poster Competition and Secondary School Poster Competition. Dr. Euric Bobb, former Governor of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, has been selected as this year’s feature speaker and in keeping with the tradition of the conference; this year’s conference honours Dr. Ralph Henry, former Head of Department of Economics (1990-1994).
