The Trade and Economic Development Unit (TEDU) at The University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Department of Economics hosts a Conference on Revenue Management in Hydrocarbon Economies. This conference will take place from June 20th-22nd, 2012 at the Port of Spain Ballroom, HYATT Regency, Port of Spain.
This conference will bring together local, regional and international experts in the field of revenue management in the context of a dominant hydrocarbon sector, as well as enhance the resource revenue management process in Trinidad and Tobago.
Professor Richard Auty, Professor Emeritus of Economic Geography at Lancaster University, will be the feature speaker. Specially invited guests include Professor Clement Sankat, UWI St. Augustine Campus Principal; Mr. Ewart Williams, Governor of the Central Bank; Mr. Maurice Suite, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance; Dr. Hunter Monre, International Development Bank; Mrs. Valarie Mercer-Blackman, Inter-American Development Bank; Indera Sagewan-Alli, Caribbean Centre for Competiveness, UWI; and Mr. Matthew Genasci, Revenue Watch Institute.
Among the activities at this three-day conference are two panel discussions. The first, titled Historical Context of the Petroleum Industry in Trinidad and Tobago, will be chaired by Dr. Thackeray Driver, CEO at the Energy Chamber, and explores the historical context of the petroleum industry in Trinidad and Tobago from the personal experiences of the experts in the field. This panel discussion takes place on June 20th, from 6-8pm, at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI St. Augustine Campus, and is free of charge and open to the public.
The second panel discussion will focus on the topic, Frontiers of Development, the Hydrocarbon Industry in Trinidad and Tobago, where members of the panel will track the modern development of the energy sector, focusing specifically on developments in both the downstream and upstream sectors. Chaired by Dr. Ronald Ramkissoon, Chief Economist at Republic Bank Ltd, this panel discussion will also identify new directions and the changing role of multinational corporations in the energy sector. It is carded for June 21st, from 6-8pm, at the Port of Spain Ballroom, HYATT Regency and is by invitation only.
One highlight of the conference is the presentation of prizes to the winners of its essay competition for secondary school students. This competition specifically targeted CAPE students who are studying Economics and required participants to write on the topic: In what ways can the foreign companies operating in the energy sector become more active in sustainable development in Trinidad and Tobago? Monetary prizes and trophies will be awarded to the writers of the best three essays.
Members of the public are invited to register for the Conference on Revenue Management in Hydrocarbon Economies at a cost of US$200 per participant. This can be paid in advance at the Cashier at the Bursary, UWI St. Augustine; via wire transfer to “TEDU–CORM” or at the Secretariat, HYATT Regency, on the days of the conference.
