UWI Calendar of Events : March 2010Campus Literature Week The 11th edition of the Campus Literature Week will take place from March 1-5. There will be daily lunch-time readings from noon to 1.30pm by writers of the campus community, including published writers of the Department of Liberal Arts, MFA students, and other past and present students of the University. The final event will take place on Friday evening when Writer-in-Residence, NourbeSe Philip, will read. For further information, please contact Dr Giselle Rampaul at Giselle.Rampaul@sta.uwi.edu or Dr Geraldine Skeete at Geraldine.Skeete@sta.uwi.edu. 50th Anniversary Celebrations Launch The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus will launch its 50th Anniversary celebrations with a media launch and rededication of the Administration Building on Friday 12th March, 2010 at 10am. This launch will start a year-long celebration for the Campus with a special week of activities from October 10th to 15th marking the official anniversary, since ICTA and UCWI were formally merged on 12 October 1960. The week will start with an Inter-Faith Service on the 10th, followed by a Panel Discussion and book launch, among other events. Throughout 2010 the St. Augustine Campus will celebrate with a Family Day, a Distinguished Lecture Series and other significant staff and student events. The Distinguished Lecture Series will highlight the accomplishments and contribution from each of the five faculties and the vision for the future. Sir George Alleyne Distinguished Lecture Series Sir Christopher Edwards will deliver the Sir George Alleyne Distinguished Lecture on “The development of medical education towards 2020 and beyond.” Sir Christopher’s lecture will take place at Daaga Auditorium on the St. Augustine Campus and not at the EWMSC as previously stated. For further information, please call 645-2640 Ext 5025 or 5021World of Work (WOW) Registration: 27 January-3 February, 2010 For further information, please contact Student Advisory Services at (868) 662-2002, Ext. 2360 Making Literacy Improvement a Reality The School of Education at the Mona Campus in Jamaica, hosts its biennial literary conference, “Making Literacy Improvement a Reality for Adolescents and at Risk Youths.” The SOE literacy symposium is the premier regional forum for dissemination of research findings, exploration of issues and initiatives that contribute to or mitigate literacy improvement. This biennial symposium attracts participants from the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. The small economies of the Caribbean and other areas are grappling with the consequences of a global financial and economic meltdown. These consequences include falling demand for traditional products like tourism, dwindling remittances and the accompanying intensification of negative social ills like unemployment, rising criminality, overburdened health and educational facilities and the like. What are the options, given the limited policy space now available to these small economies? The conference addresses these issues.
