REALM
Renee Ali, PhD student and researcher
with the
Department of Life Sciences in the Faculty of Science
and Technology at UWI St Augustine nets mosquitoes
on a site visit in Chaguaramas. Renee is a member of
UWI’s
“mosquito team”
and is continuing the work of
the late
Professor Dave Chadee
, the internationally
renowned scholar whose work has been so impactful
that he was known as
“Mosquito Man”
. Focusing on
the relatively unexplored mosquito-born Mayaro virus,
Renee has already made several strides in unlocking
the virus and its vector, the mysterious
Haemagogus
janthinomys
mosquito. The work of Renee and her
colleagues within Life Sciences is an example of the kind
of high impact research taking place at the St Augustine
Campus, research that may one day save lives.
