Research Pillars & Priorities

Research Strengths

The University of the West Indies in its Strategic Plan 2002-2007 has identified eight Research Pillars as follows:

1. Biotechnology
2. Cultural Studies
3. Education
4. Health and Wellness
5. Hospitality and Tourism
6. Information Technology
7. Social and Economic Studies
8. Sustainable Environmental Studies

The St. Augustine Campus has identified a ninth:

9. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

On this campus we have also identified a number of niche areas in which we either have strengths or can build strengths and the Campus has mandated its Departments or Faculties to make a serious attempt to build up research niches involving Faculty and postgraduate students and organize clusters or teams which will also be given the opportunity to strengthen such initiatives with Post Doctoral Researchers. TT$500,000.00 has been allocated to each of the following seven areas for postgraduate student scholarships, funding of Post Doctorals and counterpart funding on monies raised from other sources outside the University system by Researchers. Based on success indicators, this initial amount will be increased to ensure sustainable success.

Initial areas of focus for funding for the 2004-2007 period are:

1. Tropical Medicine and Tropical Veterinary Medicine
2. Tropical Biodiversity and Environmental Issues related to Small Island Developing States
3. Energy Studies
4. Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Design
5. Tropical Agriculture Best Practice; Food Security; Biotechnology and WTO related issues in the field of Agriculture
6. Cultural Studies – Multidisciplinary approaches; multicultural focus; culture and entrepreneurship; culture and development; Rethinking Cultural Theory; Aspects of Caribbean Culture
7. Education with emphasis on Teacher Education – teaching and learning issues and challenges; learning environments; improving primary and secondary education quality; curriculum design and development; socio-economic challenges in educational development; holistic education for Caribbean reality in an interconnected world.
