This course examines some of the major political, socio-economic and foreign policy issues in contemporary Latin America. Given the size and complexity of the region, we are obliged to be selective in our coverage. We draw on historical and political economy approaches as we explore the dynamics of political polarization, economic transitions and the quest for sustainable human development in Latin American societies. The course begins with a series of introductory sessions on the history and political and institutional development of Latin America as well as some aspects of regional and international relations. Guest lecturers will also give usthe benefit of their insightsinto key issues facing specific countries in Latin America. The countries selected are all illustrative of various contemporary political, security, social and economic challenges which Latin American societies are grappling with, and they are all expected to hold presidential elections during 2018. Thereafter, the course switches to seminar format. Groups of students will be responsible for presenting seminar papers on assigned topics and leading the discussions on these themes. All students will also make an individual presentation during the course.
