The complexities of conducting research into the relevant institutions (e.g., prisons, courts, police, etc.) will be discussed so as to provide the student with the ability to shape a research design and methodology to help accommodate such complexities while maintaining the integrity of the research objectives. This course will also move from techniques of gaining access to research sites, framing ‘researchable’ questions, various methods of data collection and analysis, and gaining collaboration for both data collection and production of the final report. The appropriate use of parametric and non-parametric tests in criminological research will also be part of the course. Several research reports will be examined to provide practical illustrations of the peculiarities of criminological research and methodology.
