Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie
Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie is Pro Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development at the University of the West Indies and Founding Director of the Institute of Critical Thinking. He served as Principal of the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies for six (6) years, as Executive Director of the Institute of Business for nine (9) years and Chairman of the National Institute for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST) for six (6) years. As Chairman of NIHERST he facilitated the creation of the College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAAT) and developed the rationale for the establishment of the National Training Agency (NTA). He also served as Chairman of the Committee which formulated a National Policy for Tertiary Education for the Vision 2020 Committee.
Dr. Tewarie received his undergraduate degree in English at Northwestern University and a Master’s degree in English and American Literature at the University of Chicago. From the Pennsylvania State University he received his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. He has also been the beneficiary of British Council programmes on leadership and management in higher educational institutions and is a graduate of the Leadership programme of the Said School of Business at Oxford University. Dr. Tewarie has published many articles and book chapters on economic, educational and developmental issues and has written three books – Governance in the Twenty First Century University (with Dennis Gayle and A. Quinton White, Eric Ashe, 2003), Trade, Investment and Development in the Caribbean (with Roger Hosein in 2006) and V.S. Naipaul Revisited: Ethnicity, Marginality and the Triumph of Individual Will (sole author, 2007). He is currently working on a publication of distinguished lectures from Naipaul’s year of celebration. In literature he has written on the work of V.S. Naipaul, Laxmi Persaud and Ralph Ellison.
