About the CRC
Our Philosophy
We believe that each child is a unique individual. Therefore, the Centre endeavors to be sensitive to each child’s social, emotional, creative, intellectual, and physical needs, and provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is eclectic and focused on learning processes. We believe that children learn through successful experiences, and so the UWI-CRC provides an environment that fosters critical thinking that reflects high-quality global standards.
Our Focus
Here at the UWI Children’s Research Centre we have cultivated an established, national, regional and international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and innovation in the field of education.
The protection and promotion of the rights of the child to a quality home and school environment are important to us. As a priority, we seek to target the critical early childhood development needs of the Caribbean. We work to accomplish these goals through a model teacher development unit, policy-oriented research, and complementary early childhood services to families and their communities.
Our 'Key Goals'
- To develop the maximum potential of each child in an environment that is safe, healthy, and intellectually stimulating, and that fosters physical, mental, social, and emotional growth, positive moral values, and a sense of independence in each child.
- To serve as an advocate for young children and as a 'model programme' for the community.
- To provide a setting where university students can develop expertise and skills, and can conduct research in early childhood education.
- To provide a facility for research into problems and issues affecting early childhood education in the Caribbean. The facility will provide important information in such areas as health, nutrition, child welfare, and social planning in the region.
