Reducing women’s vulnerabilities in the care economy

In the brief, we focus on the care of older persons, presenting scenarios from qualitative and quantitative research in the multicultural Caribbean on the convergence of migration and care, and a cultural preference for ageing-in-place. With a high reliance on family and community care, these expectations and practices increase the burden on women as unwaged and waged carers. Our recommendations centre the important role of the state in enhancing social protections rather than reducing them, as well as the value of local knowledge in effective policy making.
