National Herbarium of Trinidad and Tobago

The St. Augustine campus is home to an arboretum (living museum of trees) inherited from the former Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA). Over the years many of the trees were removed to erect new buildings or succumbed to pests and diseases and have not been replaced. The revitalisation of the arboretum is an initiative by the Herbarium and the Geography Department to bring awareness to the important role trees play in the urban landscape and to encourage the preservation and good management practices of trees in the urban landscape.  There are approximately over 800 trees on the campus grounds. Some of the larger trees, such as the Saman (Samanea saman) are hosts to a diverse range of epiphytes including bromeliads, ferns, cacti, orchids and bryophytes (mosses and liverworts).We aim to bring back this rich biodiversity on the campus grounds.
