LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I (GRADE 7)

Applications are invited for the two (2) posts of Laboratory Technician I (Grade 7) in the Department of Para-Clinical Sciences.
Duties of the post include:
1. Receiving and carrying out instructions from the Lecturer(s) in charge of the laboratory or project assigned.
2. Preparing routine media and microbiology slides, working with microorganisms, tissue cultures, cell lines preparations and be able to perform common slide preparation/staining as used in microbiology.
3. Preparing and /or acquiring necessary material for laboratory sessions, including apparatuses, equipment, chemicals, and other items.
4. Taking regular inventories of laboratory supplies and assessing the requirements for ordering replacement on a timely basis.
5. Preparing the laboratory for practical sessions and assisting where necessary in the smooth running of the laboratory.
6. Performing tests and experiments relative to teaching and research laboratories.
7. Maintaining a clean, organized laboratory and reporting problems to the Chief Technician.
8. Performing routine maintenance and regular maintenance checks on equipment. Reporting to the Chief Technician for service and repairs and follow up regularly.
9. Monitoring of safety supplies and equipment to ensure they are functional and adequate.
10. Ensuring the safe handling, storage and disposal of laboratory items (chemicals, media, samples, etc.).
11. Assisting undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the laboratory.
12. Assisting the Chief Technician with the purchasing activities of each unit.
13. Undertakes administrative duties including answering mail and correspondence.
14. Examining equipment and reporting to relevant staff when problems occur.
15. Performing other related duties as may be assigned by the Chief Laboratory Technician, or her nominated representative, or her nominated Laboratory Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Applicants should be familiar with the University’s mission, structure, policies, and procedures. Applicants must have a working knowledge of standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures policies, and regulations as it relates to laboratory materials and equipment. Applicants should have performed subculturing of microorganisms and should be competent in light microscopy. The successful applicant should have experience in organising student labs and examinations. Candidates should possess good interpersonal skills and communication and be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
Candidates must possess an approved Medical Laboratory Technology Diploma OR an approved Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology; its equivalent or higher standard of education from a registered/accredited institution.
Preferred:
An approved Bachelors Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a registered/accredited institution.
EXPERIENCE
Essential:
At least three (3) year of relevant work experience in a laboratory environment.

Salary will be fixed in accordance with Grade 7 ($8253.00 x 296 - $11, 805.00) of the salary scale.
