Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess at minimum, a PhD from a recognized university in Sociology or a closely related field.

Candidates must also possess: 

  • At least three (3) years’ teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at a recognized university
  • Strong background in research methodology 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage: 

  • Experience in teaching in multiple modes such as Face-to-Face, online, hybrid and blended environments
  • A good record of research and publications in reputable, peer reviewed journals in the field of Sociology
  • Proficiency in teaching in at least three (3) of the following related areas at the postgraduate level:

            o   Introduction to Sociology

            o   Current Trends in Sociological Theory

            o   Advanced Research Design and Statistics

            o   Survey Design and Analysis

            o   Qualitative Methods

The following would be considered assets: 

  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Experience in supervising research projects at the postgraduate level
  • Experience in course design and curriculum review 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Teaching at the undergraduate and post graduate levels in Sociology
  • Assisting in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects/theses in Sociology
  • Developing a research agenda in Sociology and disseminating through published papers and conference presentations
  • Serving on Departmental, Faculty and University committees
  • Attending Departmental and Faculty meetings
  • Assisting with the periodic review of the curriculum
  • Advising undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Supporting colleagues on Departmental activities such as outreach initiatives, research, teaching orientation and academic advising 

Personal Attributes

The Campus places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.

Candidate should also: 

  • Be willing to work in an advance multidisciplinary environment
  • Be committed to supporting outreach activities that promote the multifaceted and rich aspects of the programmes and activities within the department
  • Be self-motivated and capable of motivating students  
  • Be willing to apply diverse hybrid methods of teaching
  • Possess familiarity with tertiary level education in the Caribbean
  • Be willing to forge working relationships and meaningful engagement with external stakeholders (industry and universities)
