Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess at minimum:   

  • a Doctor of Optometry (OD) which should be a professional doctorate emphasizing advanced clinical training and comprehensive eye care, accredited by recognized optometric boards

             OR 

  • a Ph.D. in Optometry which should be an advanced research-focused degree from accredited institutions with a focus on clinical and academic contributions in vision science 

            AND

  • ii. Board Certification - Certification by recognized boards
  • iii. Fellowship in Optometry 

           o    FAAO Fellowship with at least three (3) years’ of senior-level clinical practice

           o    Specialized fellowships (Binocular Vision, Contact Lens and Low Vision) with a minimum of

                 three  (3) years’ experience in the subspecialty

Candidates should also possess:  

  • More than two (2) years’ teaching experience in the field of Optometry 

            AND 

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:   

           o    Advanced Contact Lens

           o    Paediatric and Binocular Vision

           o    Visual Science/Visual Optics

           o    Public Health/Primary Eye Care

           o    Low Vision

           o    Management of Ocular Disease

           o    Myopia Control 

  • At least two (2) years’ experience in more than one specialty area
  • Proficiency in sub-speciality training 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:  

  • At least one (1) year of clinical experience post-specialist qualification in Optometry, ensuring advanced clinical competency and practical application of specialized skills in eye care
  • Strong record of conference presentations, both locally and internationally
  • Proven track record of research and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in the guidance and supervision of student research
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the field of Optometry

Key Key Responsibilities  

  • Teaching and supervising undergraduate students in the Optometry programme
  • Working closely with staff in the Faculty of Medical Sciences in providing quality leadership in teaching and curriculum development
  • Providing clinical supervision and hands-on training
  • Participating in problem-based learning activities and Optometry externships
  • Supporting University assessment and examination activities
  • Guiding and supervising student research
  • Conducting impactful research and publishing findings
  • Attracting external funding for research and development
  • Developing postgraduate programmes and specialized courses

Personal Attributes
