Applications are invited for the post of Security Officer in the UWI Estate Police Services

 

Job Summary:

The Security Officer will be responsible for enforcing and maintaining law and order at all University premises and locations, as well as conducting patrols and other duties. Applicants should be able to work shifts on a rotational basis at the St. Augustine Campus, Penal-Debe South Campus, Couva Hospital and Multi Training Facility, Department of Creative and Festival Arts, Cheeseman Building, Gordon Street, St. Augustine, Mt. Hope (Faculty of Medical Sciences) and any other satellite locations. All assigned duties are in strict conformance with existing department/unit regulations, roles, procedures and codes of conduct.

 

Duties of the post include:

1. Conducting mobile and foot patrols.

2. Controlling access to the University premises at the main gates as well as other points of entry and exit.

3. Carrying out surveillance of car parks and other specific areas.

4. Conducting investigations/enquiries as directed by supervisors.

5.  Performing sentry and guard duty at prescribed locations.

6. Reporting orally and in writing on incidents and occurrences during each shift as appropriate.

7. Assisting and responding to requests and queries from students, staff, and visitors.

8.  Participating in drills.

9.  Performing any other related duties as requested by all senior officers.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

Applicants should:

· Be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago

· Be between eighteen (18) and forty (40) years of age

· Be in good physical health to handle patrolling, standing for long periods, and responding to incidents quickly

· Be able to remain calm and composed during emergencies or high-pressure situations

· Possess a valid Trinidad and Tobago Driver’s Permit with a Class 3 endorsement to drive light motor vehicles (manual transmission will be considered an asset)

· Have knowledge of the duties/roles and responsibilities of the Estate Police Service. 

· Possess the capacity to present information clearly and concisely in verbal or written form.

· Be able to work co-operatively and flexibly with other team members, when working under stressful conditions.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a minimum of at least three (3) GCE ‘O’ Levels or CXC/CSEC (Grades I, II or III from 1998) passes including English, its equivalent or a higher standard of education from a registered/accredited institution; or should have successfully completed or currently enrolled in The UWI Ancillary Staff Training Programme or the C.O.R.E. Training Programme.

 

Experience

Relevant work experience will be considered. Applicants who are precepted or have passed the precept examination previously will enjoy an advantage.

N.B. Candidates must adhere to and meet ALL the requirements listed above to be considered as having successfully completed Step 2 of the screening process. Only candidates who meet the requirements at this stage will proceed to the next step.

Other requirements

Candidates successful in the screening process will proceed to the next steps and may be required to complete the undermentioned requirements:

· Pass a written examination.

· Pass an agility test.

· Attend an interview which will be conducted in person before a select panel.

· Attend a medical examination which includes drug testing

· Undergo psychometric and psychiatric assessments (Precept)

· Pass a background check

Training

· The initial training period will be delivered over a twelve (12) week cycle.

· During this period successful applicants would be required to participate in physical activities which include strenuous exercises and/ or work. They are also required to sit and pass two (2) written examinations.

· Upon successful completion of training, trainees will be considered Security Officers until they have written and passed the precept examination set by the TTPS and have fulfilled all the requirements to be sworn in as an Estate Constable.

· Security Officers will start their careers as Estate Constables after becoming precepted.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

· During training a salary of $5,000.00 per month is received.

· After graduating from training, Security Officers will receive a salary of $5,600.00 per month.

· Upon appointment as an Estate Constable, recruits will receive a salary of $6,220.00 with benefits including cost of living allowance, uniform allowance, paid leave, and shift allowance, and will be appraised annually on their anniversary date.

· Security Officers will be rostered on shift, which also includes weekends

Probation

· Security Officers will be required to undergo a period of probation for one (1) year from the date of appointment as Estate Constable.

· This period will be closely supervised and performance evaluated through continuous assessment.

· Should the officer fail to perform at an expected standard, recommendations will be made for the officer to be relieved of duties and face dismissal.
