Grade 10 Chief Workshop Technician

Applications are invited for the post of Chief Workshop Technician (Grade 10), in the Department of Physics.
The Chief Workshop Technician is expected to work independently under minimal supervision to provide oversight of general quality control; to enforce safety regulations for non-laboratory and non-research spaces (remit of Chief aboratory Technician); to assist the Development Engineer with the Maintenance of the department’s Electron Microscopy Unit (EMU) located at the Mt Hope Compound; and to coordinate the maintainance of the department’s facility at the UWI field station.
Duties of the post include:
1.Planning, directing and supervising the work and responsibilities of the Storekeeper, custodial staff and Mechanical Workshop staff.
2.Working closely with the Administrative Assistant re the HR related matters of those you immediately supervise re vacation, sick and casual leave, attendance, punctuality etc.
3.Overseeing facilities, maintenance, key management and issuance, Risk Assessment, and OSH matters and various level reports relating to these roles and, working closely with the Physics Chief Laboratory Technican who handles OSH and key-related matters for laboratory and research spaces.
4.Overseeing all project planning for the department regarding facilities, maintenance etc.
5.Liaising with campus and industry partners re income generation for the Mechanical workshop, partnerships and research opportunities as well as working with students regarding project matters.
6.Assisting with, and delivering student workshops/seminars/training regarding woodworking, mechanical, and general OSH matters and working with the Chief Laboraoty Tehcnician to jointly deliver seminars on lab-related OSH matters.
7.Coordinating the maintenance and management of the departmental vehicle in collaboration with the Administrative Assistant and designates.
8.Managing all administrative, Project and petty contract procedures related to the UWI Division of Facilities Management (DFM).
9.Working closely with the FST Maintenance crew regarding Faculty-level maintenance matters.
10.Performing any other related duties assigned by the Head of Department.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Applicants should have knowledge and familiarity with the University’s mission, regulations, structure, policies, and procedures. Applicants must have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Leadership and Supervisory Management. Applicants must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and various stakeholders and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Applicants should know the OHS Act and must also possess good report skills, presentation skills and Inventory Management. Knowledge of Procurement and Logistics Management. Applicants should possess knowledge in data analysis. Some technical experience in an educational research institute will be an asset. Customer and stakeholder satisfaction. Financial reporting, operations and procedures. Any combination of experience and qualifications which can fully make the execution of the roles and responsibilities of the post-effective will be considered.
Applicant must be willing and able to work flexible hours on normal work days, as well as on weekends and public holidays when required and, as pre-approved by the Head of Department or his designate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
A BSc in Mechanical Engineering /Project Management / Science or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
Experience:
Required:
At least three (3) years of supervisory experience and a proven track record in forming and maintaining Industry linkages. A minimum of two (2) years in Facilities and Maintenance Management and candidates must possess at least (2) years in OSH Management.
Desirable:
Extensive knowledge and practical competence in woodwork, welding and mechanical work will be an asset.

Salary will be fixed in accordance with Grade 10 of the salary scale. ($10,761.00 x 376 - $15,273.00).
