Qualifications and Experience


The successful candidate must possess a PhD from a recognized university, which should be in
Demography, Social Statistics or a closely related field.

Candidates should also possess:

  • Teaching experience in Social and Formal Demography and at least one (1) of the following areas:

             o Applied Social Statistics
             o Research methods

  • A good record of research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals
  • Proficiency in Applied Social Statistics using at least two of the following: R, Python, MPlus, STATA, SAS
  • Demonstrated evidence of service delivery as a consultant providing official statistics and other related services to development-partners such as CARICOM, UNECLAC, IADB, CDB among others

 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • Graduate training in Applied Statistical Analysis with a focus on addressing problems that arise in socio-demographic realms
  • Experience undertaking formal research in at least three of the following areas:

            o Demographic theory and practice
            o The principles and practice of Formal Demography
            o Data collection and measurement in the context of demographic events and processes
            o The formulation and implementation of population and sustainable development policies
            o Monitoring and evaluation of socio-demographic interventions

  • Knowledge in the use of a range of software applications in Demography, for example, MORTPAK, DAPPS
  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake professional statistical activities to strengthen capabilities within the national statistical offices and wider national statistical systems

 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Graduate training in Sociology
  • Experience with regard to advising and providing training to public sector departments, non-government organizations, private sector entities, in at least three of the following:

            o The preparation of demographic estimates
            o The conduct of demographic surveys and population censuses
            o Population projections
            o Multi-regional demographic techniques
            o Survival analysis
            o Event history analysis

  • Familiarity with the collection, preparation, analysis and interpretation of Social and Demographic Statistics in at least three (3) of the following areas:

            o Education and literacy
            o Living standards measurement
            o Household expenditure surveys
            o Crime statistics
            o Gender statistics

  • Proficiency in areas such as official statistics, survey sampling design and estimation, and monitoring and evaluation

 

Special Responsibilities

  • Teaching at the graduate level
  • Engaging in scholarly research and publication
  • Participating in grant-funded research
  • Delivering departmental and university consultancy services, public service and university outreach
