The Faculty of Law at UWI, St Augustine offers two taught postgraduate degree options, the LLM and the Postgraduate Diploma in Law.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should ideally possess an LLB with lower second class honours or better from an approved University. Persons holding a Legal Education Certificate or equivalent will also be considered for admission. In extraordinary circumstances, applicants possessing other non-law qualifications may be considered for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Law.
Application Procedure
Making the Application
Applicants are to file an application using the UWI, St Augustine application portal – https://sta.uwi.edu/admissions/postgrad/application-process.
Post-application
Once the application is submitted, it is forwarded to the Faculty of Law where the Entrance Committee will make a decision. It is not unusual for the Entrance Committee to request an interview with the applicant.
Acceptance
Once an applicant is offered a place on the programme, they will be notified by the UWI. The Faculty of Law is not responsible for the communication of acceptance letters.
Programme Requirements
The LLM programme requires completion of 36 credits worth of courses. The Postgraduate Diploma in Law requires the completion of 24 credits worth of courses.
Both the LLM and Postgraduate Diploma in Law programmes offer specialisations in a range of key legal areas – Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Legislative Drafting, Oil and Gas Law and Public Law. These specialisations require the completion of certain courses in order to graduate with the specialism.
Students registered for the LLM or Postgraduate Diploma in Law can opt to take courses offered by any of the three Faculties of Law across the UWI.
Programme Specialisations
Corporate and Commercial Law
The Corporate and Commercial Law specialism covers areas of law such as Banking Law, Company Law, Corporate Finance, Corporate Governance, Corporate Insolvency Law and Insurance Law. Graduates will be equipped to address issues and problems arising in these areas and moreover, to serve as consultants, legal advisors and policy advisors to clients, including corporate clients and regional Governments. The programme lays the foundation for graduates to contribute to the development of the Caribbean jurisprudence in the area of corporate and commercial law.
UWI St Augustine staff teaching in this specialised pathway include: Mr John Jeremie SC, Dr Chumah Amaefule and active and former CCJ judges who serve as adjunct staff.
Intellectual Property Law
The specialism in Intellectual Property Law is designed to equip students with an in-depth understanding of the various areas of intellectual property including: Copyright, Patents and Trade Marks. Graduates of this specialism will be able to apply the various intellectual property rights in commerce and practice, with a focal point of developing the Caribbean jurisprudence in the area. While the Caribbean is working assiduously to develop a robust intellectual property law framework, the respect for and acceptance of intellectual property rights has been slow. As such, the specialisation aims to develop legal minds to accelerate intellectual property awareness and development at all levels of society.
UWI St Augustine staff teaching in this specialised pathway include: Dr Justin Koo and Dr Emma Perot, who are both actively researching and publishing in a number of topical aspects of the field.
Legislative Drafting
The Legislative Drafting specialism is designed to train persons in the skill of drafting legislation to further the regulation of societal affairs. In addition to instruction in the technical skill of drafting ‘traditional’ legislation, the pathway provides the candidates with a basic understanding of treaty drafting and constitution writing.
The specialisation brings greater intellectual depth to candidates so that they will be both technically qualified draftspersons and effective policy advisors to their Governments and other clients. To this end, the specialism requires that candidates registered for the LLM in Legislative Drafting register for Public Law I (Advanced Constitutional Law) and Public Law II (Advanced Administrative Law). Persons enrolled on the Legislative Drafting pathway may also elect to engage in a Supervised Legislative Drafting Internship.
This specialised pathway is led by Mrs Jonêtta Jeet-Ramsahai, who is the Assistant Chief Parliamentary Counsel, with 22-years experience in legislative drafting.
Oil and Gas Law
Oil and Gas Law is considered as one of the areas of importance to Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. Furthermore, the wider Caribbean region is increasingly receptive to energy issues and thus it is envisaged that this specialism will form part of a broader ensure a greater awareness of energy related issues and moreover, the better management of energy resources.
The specialism in Oil and Gas Law is only available at the Faculty of Law, UWI St Augustine Campus and is therefore unique to the region. The specialisation addresses international oil, gas and energy issues, which prepares graduates to work on the international market. The core purpose of the pathway is to equip graduates with a critical understanding of how and why the law with respect to upstream and downstream oil and gas operations is rapidly changing, in view of the increasing importance of environmental, climate change, energy transition and sustainable development issues.
UWI St Augustine staff teaching in this specialised pathway include: Professor Rafael Heffron, Dr Eduardo Pereira and Mrs Alicia Elias-Roberts, who are all actively working and publishing in the academic field and industry.
Public Law
The subject of public law is central to the practice of good democratic governance and to the success of CARICOM’s Single Market and Economy. The Public Law pathway aims to provide graduates with a deeper understanding of issues in the core subjects of Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, in addition to other relevant areas of law concerning the regulation of public authorities. This specialism will also be useful for senior managers of the public service and other persons who provide legal or policy advice to governments.
