Law has been taught at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill since 1970. The Faculty of Law at St Augustine was reconfigured to offer the full LLB and graduate programs in 2012. It offers a complete undergraduate programme in law which is intended to provide a thorough grounding in the principles of law for those undergraduates who read law with the intention of practicing or those who intend to pursue taught or research graduate degrees. The FOL 2023/2024 Student Undergraduate Faculty booklet is available for download.
The normal entrance qualification for the Faculty of Law (St. Augustine) is the basic Matriculation standard of FIVE subjects, at least TWO of which must be at CAPE (Units 1 and 2) or equivalent level, the remainder at CSEC general or equivalent level. There are no special subject requirements in addition to those necessary for Matriculation. However, successful entrants typically have much higher qualifications since entry is competitive.
Selection for admission into the Faculty of Law is based on a points system. The Faculty may consider applications from persons who satisfy basic Matriculation standards but whose academic qualifications are not competitive in relation to the points system. In particular, mature applicants over 30 and law enforcement personnel who have shown evidence of academic and professional achievement may be considered. The Makandal Daaga Scholarship is also assessed according to special criteria, such as a candidate’s social activism or work in the community.
Applicants applying for transfer from Faculties other than law at UWI will be required to have an overall/cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater in order to be considered.
All applicants will receive notification of their eligibility and the decision in relation to their case when first offers are made. It is imperative that any deadlines for acceptance set by the University are adhered to.
Applicants should therefore read University replies with the utmost care
