Milestones

Celebrate with us

In 2024/2025, the Campus marked achievements that reflected its 65-year legacy and its drive to move beyond.

Beyond 65: UWI St Augustine Celebrates

In 2025, the St Augustine Campus marked its 65th anniversary. The theme “Beyond 65: From the Caribbean, For the World” captured the Campus’s evolution from a former agricultural college with 67 students in 1960 to a vibrant, multidisciplinary institution serving thousands. It also reflects the significant contributions of its academic staff and alumni, who address pressing regional and global challenges such as climate change, trade and food security.

100 Years of Agriculture: Documentary Launch

The Faculty of Food & Agriculture (FFA) commemorated a century of agricultural education with the documentary Celebrating 100 Years of Agriculture, which premiered in December 2024. The hour-long film traces the Faculty’s evolution from its colonial origins to its role in Caribbean-led research and education.

The Faculty of Food & Agriculture remains unique to the St Augustine Campus and continues to focus on regional food security and sustainability.

50 Years of PG Dip Ed

The UWI St Augustine School of Education celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PG Dip Ed) programme with a symposium and the launch of a commemorative journal issue highlighting the programme’s history and its key role in training secondary school teachers and shaping education policy. Articles in the journal highlight the programme’s theoretical foundation, curriculum design, and impact on national development.

20 Years: UWI Arts Steel

The Department of Creative & Festival Arts (DCFA) celebrated the 20th anniversary of UWI Arts Steel with Dancing on Steel, a performance at Queen’s Hall combining steelpan and dance. The music, composed by Dr Jeannine Remy and conducted by Jessel Murray, featured classic and modern pieces, with choreography by Joanna Charles. Performers included students, alumni, and staff. UWI Arts Steel, founded in 2002 by students and later co-directed by Mr Murray and the late Nervin Saunders, continues to promote cultural heritage. Dancing on Steel was recorded for the international PASIC conference, signalling the global interest in supporting the preservation of Trinidad & Tobago’s national instrument.

DSSD at 10

The Division of Student Services & Development (DSSD) celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of growth as a student-centred unit that supports engagement, well-being and success. DSSD now provides more than fifty services and development programmes across nine departments, and over the years has improved the student experience by increasing access to support, reducing response times, updating policies and creating consistent service standards. Services span Careers, Counselling, Financial Advisory Services, Student Accommodation, Student Activities, Student Engagement, and Student Life. The DSSD also provides administrative support to the Guild Office.

Student & Alumni Excellence

Law students secured silver at the Caribbean Court of Justice International Law Moot, with Alexia Trim named Best Oralist. Meanwhile, Life Sciences students swept the Shell/NIHERST NXplorers Competition, claiming all top awards for sustainability‑driven innovations.

In Sports such as netball, cricket, and paralypic track and field, St. Augustine students led national teams, achieved record‑breaking performances, and represented the regionadmirably. Beyond the field, students earned prestigious scholarships, international research placements, and recognition for cutting‑edge work in climate resilience, engineering and renewable energy.

Alumni also shone bright with historic debuts on the West Indies men’s cricket team, a Youth Soca Champion title, world‑class professional milestones and award‑winning innovation.
