Call For Papers and Panels
The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social & Economic Studies (SALISES), in collaboration with BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago and the Turtle Village Trust of Trinidad & Tobago, is issuing a call for papers and panels for an International Conference on the theme:
Turtle Conservation, ecotourism and sustainable community development
The conference, which will be held at the Learning Resource Centre on St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago over the period July 28-29, 2009, is a forum for the exchange of ideas on critical issues related to turtle conservation, ecotourism, sustainable community development and the environment. Participation is open to scholars, policy makers, graduate students, professionals and all persons interested in the burning issues associated with this theme. We are particularly interested in the participation of NGOs and civil society organizations who may wish to present panels on the theme.
The aims of the conference are to:
- Develop a network of sector interest working groups;
- Expand and empower the networks of ecotourism, community development, environmental conservation and sustainable tourism development among Turtle Village Trust groups, individuals, professionals and practitioners;
- Empower stakeholders with innovative strategies for change;
- Advance ecotourism and sustainable tourism policy development at multiple levels of government;
- Promote effective change for environmentally and economically sustainable community development by utilizing best practice examples and lessons learned;
- Engage local community groups as community ecotourism business leaders and environmental stewards in the sustainable growth of the tourism sector in communities;
- Actively promote change in industry practices to combat wild life conservation, sea turtle conservation, natural resources management, climate change and other threats to bio-cultural diversity;
- Enhance understanding and collaboration between academics and leaders of business and government so as to improve the quality of decision-making on developmental issues confronting communities.
Papers and Panels are invited for the following topics:
- Sea Turtle Conservation Models
- Research Strategies in Sea Turtle Conservation
- Community Based Ecotourism
- Agrotourism and the community
- NGO Governance and Financial Issues
- Climate Change
- Ecotourism and sustainable tourism policy development
What to submit
The proposal should identify the issue and/or topic and presentation type and should include information on resources/facilities that would be required. Submit an abstract of not more than 200 words and a short profile (approximately 100 words). Where there are co-presenters, submit a profile for each presenter.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND SUGGESTED PANELS IN WORD OR PDF FORMAT IS MAY 11, 2009.
Authors of papers and organizers of panels accepted for presentation at the conference will be notified by June 13, 2009.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF FULL PAPERS IN WORD OR PDF FORMAT IS JULY 3, 2009.
