Proposed Association

At the inaugural Human Communication Studies Conference in September 2013, the Business Meeting decided to establish an association of Caribbean Human Communication Studies, publish a journal based on submissions received by October 31 2013 and to hold the next conference in September 2015. Arising out of these decisions, the following proposals for the formation of an association are being circulated for consideration.

Please send feedback and comments by May 2nd, 2014 to humancommconference@sta.uwi.edu.

Association names for consideration (Choose one. You may also choose one and suggest a new name)

We are seeking your views on a name for our proposed association. Here are some suggestions:

  • Association for Human Communication Studies in the Caribbean (AHCSC)
  • Caribbean Association for Human Communication Studies (CAHCS)
  • Human Communication Studies Association in the Caribbean (HCSAC)
  • Caribbean Human Communication Studies Association (CHCSA)

Association Aim and Scope

The association aims to promote the study, teaching and research of human communication studies in the Caribbean and beyond. It will achieve this aim by engaging in membership and professional development activities, organising and hosting conferences and meetings and publishing research in an international peer-reviewed journal and other publication outlets.

The association will be known as the Association for Human Communication Studies (AHCSC) (or such other name as agreed upon by the founding members). The business of the association will be guided by a constitution and an executive committee, the Executive Board. An interim executive committee consisting of persons nominated or volunteering from among the founding members at The University of the West Indies will be established to develop a constitution, create a mailing list and a membership base, and establish the journal and an editorial board, and an association website.

Membership will be renewable on payment of the required fees and charges on an annual basis or for such other specified periods. Membership benefits include annual subscription to the association’s journal, discounted annual conference registration and other services and offers that may become available to fully-paid members. Membership is open to academic staff, students and professionals with an interest in human communication studies and related disciplines

Executive Board

The Editorial Board will be established initially from among the founding members. The Executive Board will initially consist of the President, Vice-President, Secretary/Treasurer and two other nominated Board members from among founding members such as inaugural conference presenters and participants, peer reviewers and other persons eligible for membership as approved by the President in consultation with the Officers of the Executive Board. The Executive Board will serve initially for three years from March 2014 until the next conference after the first term of three and half years (i.e. September 2017) and will be installed at the relevant Business Meeting every three years thereafter after being elected.
