The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in conjunction with the Engineering Institute will be hosting a free Webinar titled "Accelerating the Caribbean Digital Ecosystem". The Webinar will be hosted by Dr. Kim Mallalieu, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
This webinar considers matters that are critical to digital transformation in the Caribbean. It recognizes the dependence on adequate infrastructure, fit for purpose services, and purposeful human capacity building for the region to facilitate, and profit from, digitalization. Its contribution to the regional discourse is posed in the following areas:
• Growth within ICT Infrastructure and services
• Cybersecurity concerns and best practices
• Recommendations and strategies that support maximum returns on investment in the digital economy

Dr. Kim Mallalieu (BS MIT, MS UR, PhD UCL) is a senior lecturer in Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of the West Indies, Lead of the Caribbean ICT Research Programme, and Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago. She has led national, regional and international initiatives that build capacity in ICT policy, regulation, development, application and use; and is the recipient of local, regional and international teaching and research awards, and other awards of distinction. She is a regular speaker, chair and multichannel contributor to international fora on development-focused technology, policy and regulation.

Patrick attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he obtained five degrees including a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has worked at Bose Corporation, Bell Laboratories, AT&T Laboratories, Ericsson and Huawei. He has published extensively with over 150 refereed journal and conference publications. He holds 41 granted patents in the areas of telecommunications and wireless technologies. He was nominated for the Ericsson Inventor of the Year award in 2004, was the Huawei US Wireless Research Employee of the year for 2007 and is a 2015 Anthony Sabga Caribbean Laureate for Science and Technology. Patrick is presently the administrative and technical contact for the TT top level domain, CEO of the TTNIC and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of the West Indies. His present areas of research include Applied Data Science, Operations Research and Performance and Pricing Optimization for Cellular Networks. |
Eng. Jim Cowling has over forty years’ experience in industrial noise/vibration control, initially with NEI Parsons in Newcastle, UK and since 1988 with KBR in Houston, TX. Jim led KBR’s Noise & vibration Team and his work was focused on major hydrocarbon process and energy projects worldwide. This included extensive work in Trinidad working ammonia projects near Point Lisas ensuring compliance with World Bank guidelines. He is also a recognized technical authority on acoustically and flow induced vibration (AIV/FIV) in piping systems and served as a Vice-Chair on the Energy Institute’s Joint Industry Practice committee on AIV/FIV. Jim is currently the Americas Region Chair for the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. In that role he is also a member of IMechE’s Council Leadership Committee and International Strategy Board. Jim is also a member of the IMechE’s Ethics and Principles Committee. |
