Dr. Craig Ramlal leads the Control Systems Group, is the Principal Investigator of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (https:intelsyslab.com) and is the Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of The West Indies. He also serves on the United Nations Secretary General's High Level Artificial Intelligence Advisory Body. The body’s recommendations are necessary for recommending the governance framework for enabling governments, companies and institutions to properly react to the expanding world of artificial intelligence.
Regionally he serves as a technical advisor to multilateral organizations for creating policies related to AI and autonomous systems, including CARICOM's Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) working group on Artificial Intelligence. His impactful contributions include acting as a regional coordinator to develop open data strategies for Caribbean nations in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and NASA. Moreover, he served as the principal investigator for projects involved in developing ventilators, robotic systems, and decontamination strategies in conjunction with officials from the Ministry of Health and researchers from the University of Florida, aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19. He collaborated with researchers from Tallinn University to develop deep learning diagnostic tools for Estonia's national grid and designed novel collaborative robotic systems with researchers from Rutger's University. He has published several peer-reviewed journals and conference articles on novel intelligent systems and their applications.
Dr. Ramlal completed his BSc, MASc, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering through a program split between the University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago, and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. His research primarily focuses on Control Strategies, Artificial Intelligence, and Game Theoretic Systems.
